The Zero DSR/X is based upon the same platform as the company’s other electric motorcycles but with some major updates, creating Zero’s most ambitious and impressive vehicle to date. This announcement comes as a part of Zero’s 2023 model lineup, where they unveiled a swathe of new models.
The DSR/X stretches and reinforces the SR platform, increases motor torque, increases battery capacity along with a number other small tweaks. The result is an adventure bike that handles both off-roading a canyon-carving with ease.
Specifications of the DSR/X are very similar to the Zero flagship models, but with some notable differences. The motor was modified with an extra turn of its copper innards, adding around 20% more torque, an essential feature for an adventure bike, where low end torque is a significant requirement.
The Gates belt width has been extended to 25mm and uses a higher strength core, creating a system twice as strong as the belt drive on the SR series. The addition of Gates’ Mudport technology, means debris is cleared from the belt and allows for efficient off-roading.
Zero’s DSR/X makes use of Bosch’s full suite of innovative Motorcycle Stability Controls (MCS), hugely supportive for off-roading. The MSC system, assists with power management, keeping two wheels on the ground, an issue we’ve seen with high-torque electric motorcycles previously. The system also assists by applying proper rear braking, when it senses the rider is overly relying on front brakes.
The number of rides modes has been drastically increased, including a new canyon mode and customisation options to allow the rider to find a mode complimentary to their riding style. Zero claim that their professional riders achieved between ranges of 155 to 200 of off road riding.
Increased ground clearance, adjustable suspension, expanded onboard storage are all adventure specific modifications made by Zero for improved usability. This includes a refined saddles designed to make the rider feel a greater connection with the bike. The 17.3kWh battery delivers a 180 city range and a 85 mile highway range. Charging is completed from 0-80% in just two hours with the onboard charger, and can be reduced to one hour with the upgraded level 2 charger.
The bike even features a park mode which comes with a reverse control.
