The Hummingbird ‘Flax’ electric bike, weighs in at 10kg, making it the ‘lightest electric folding bike in the world’ according to the company. The non-electric version clocks in at 6.9kg, a featherweight compared to its welterweight competitors.
It’s also vegan friendly for all those really looking to commit to that plant-based diet. The bike is made from flax fibre, which is a sustainable material that is both ultra lightweight and extremely strong.
Flax fibre is said to be the next step past carbon fibre, being just as strong and light but with the added benefit of being ecologically friendly. The bike was made alongside Prodrive, the company responsible for Subaru Impreza World Rally Cars, so the bike already has a strong heritage behind it.
Equipped with a modest 250W motor that is housed alongside the batteries, controller and all other hardware in one unit, the bike has ample powered for a commuter rider. The battery is relatively small at 158Wh, delivering an estimated assisted milage of 31 miles and a top speed of 15.5mph. The electric bike also comes with a Shimano crankset and brake callipers, high performance 16in tyres an a aluminium alloy wheel set.
Starting at £4,995 it is in the higher price bracket for an electric folding bike, but we now see folding bikes at £5,000+ plus, so it’s all relative. Especially considering the cost of niche components like flax fibre frames, as high cost components like titanium hardware.
