The BikTrix Juggernaut XD is one of the most powerful e bikes ever made

Biktrix, a Canadian electric bike company, has unveiled the Juggernaut XD, its most powerful e bike to date. This electric bike features a 2000W central motor, the Bixtrix designs XD dual drive system.

The Bixtrix motor has made improvements to standard electric bike motors by having a dual system that uses a non-e bike groupset to handle the conventional pedalling and a reinforced second chain and alloy sprocket for power assisted use. This second drive unit will be able to withstand 10 times the force comparable to a regular chain and sprocket. Without this dual system a 2000W electric bike would likely shake itself apart.

The bike chain to take care of the ‘traditional’ cycling pedal power is on the right-hand side of the electric bike and the reinforced chain that deals with the assisted power on the left side of the bike through an independent power transference system. Shifting gears while under power is no longer a problem with instant power delivery to the rear wheel, regardless of gearing or pedal cadence.

Currently in the UK and EU the Juggernaut XD would be classified as a moped, but we are beginning to see the introduction of S-pedelecs and more categories which may see high powered electric bikes legalised without a licence on our shores soon.

The Biktrix Juggernaut XD electric bike is said to be capable of “50+ km/h” (31+ mph), making it as fast as a moped. The speed is likely to exceed 31mph as the motor is also said to be slight above the stated 2000W.

Yamaha expands into electric bike production alongside motor manufacture

Yamaha have unveiled three new own-label electric bikes which include a urban, gravel and mountain bike variation. These bikes are intended to be available by the end of 2022. Yamaha has made significant investments in expanding its ability to manufacture and deliver electric motors.

Yamaha intends to build on its electric heritage, by putting their own products into the market. Yamaha already has deep history within the electric bike space, having created the first Power Assist System back in the 1990s which formed the basis of the world’s first production electric bike. More than 5 million of the Yamaha drive units sold in 2021 and they are now made at scale in Europe.

One of the electric bikes unveiled by Yamaha is a speed pedelec, dubbed B01, is a new prototype hybrid bike that “intelligently combines eBike S-Pedelec functionality with moped performance and all urban terrain ability.”

In the near future Yamaha will be releasing the new NEO’s - an accessible, smart and high quality “50cc - equivalent” electric scooter followed by their “125cc - equivalent”

Motorcycle giant Indian and SUPER73 team up to create the eFTR electric bike

Motorcycle giant Indian and electric bike behemoths SUPER73 have teamed up to create the eFTR Hooligan 1.2 electric bike. The eFTR Hooligan electric bike fuses the tried and trusted powertrain from the SUPER73 with the styling of the Indian motorcycle. No licence is required and it is intended for urban transportation, commuting or recreational use.

The eFTR electric bike flaunts premium features, a 960 Watt removable battery (capable of 40 miles of throttle only and 75 miles of pedal assist), an aluminium chassis, 20 inch wheels, disc brakes, The ‘OFF ROAD’ mode, switchable via a mobile app, delivers 2000 watts of power and throttle speeds of above 28mph.

eFTR Overview & Specs

  • One eFTR Hooligan 1.2 electric bike with battery and charger (North America 120-volt compatible)

  • ECO pedal assist mode offers 75 miles of range*

  • Throttle-only operation offers 40 miles of range*

  • Off-Road Mode delivers throttle speeds above 28 mph

  • A custom seat, mid moto-style bars, a gold chain, and a relocated battery that features Indian Motorcycle branding

  • Aggressive tire tread pattern, inverted front forks, and an FTR-inspired LED headlight and wind deflector

Perhaps this is Indian’s response to Harley Davidson who launched their spin off electric bike brand, Serial One, last year. Combining the high spec SUPER73 with Indian styling this bike offers electric bike practicality with heritage.  This e bike is US only currently and sits at $3,999. Hopefully we will see its migration over to our shores in the near future.

The ‘JackRabbit’ is the definition of ‘micro’ mobility and might address our commuting issues

JackRabbit, based in San Diego, have released their 2.0 version of the JackRabbit, a tiny e bike (or better classified as an electric scooter with a seat due to non-functioning pedals)

The JackRabbit electric bike features 20” wheels, rare for such a tiny bike, and a wider rear tyre on the rear in order to compensate of a lack of suspension. The e bike also includes a rigid front fork and a single disc brakes on the rear. The JackRabbit electric bike is equipped with a 1.95″ wide front tire and a 2.5″ knobby rear tire for balance and like an e-scooter a mechanical rear caliper brake.

The mini monster packs a 300W hub motor in the rear and a removable 158Wh located in the top of the frame. This combination can push the bike up to a maximum assisted speed of 20mph. Altogether this bike claims to be able to support 12 miles of assisted riding. Weighing in at just 10.9 kg, it is also a very light vehicle.  The battery is also so small, it qualifies to be carried on airplanes, as the battery limit imposed by the TSA and many airlines is 160Wh.

BMW have unveiled a new high speed electric bike capable of 300km of range

The electric bike revealed by BMW is a speed-pedelec, meaning it can reach speeds of 37mph, which currently exceeds nearly all the limits in every country across the world. BMW account for this by having the speed modifiable via an app allowing it to be dropped to local regulation speed.

BMW expanded on this idea by suggesting the introduction of a ‘geofencing’ system system which would automatically slow the bike depending on the area it is travelling in. We already see this technology in the electric scooter hire schemes such as Voi. It has been suggested that this geofencing idea will soon apply to cars. The BMW ‘eDrive’ system already using geofencing to switch it’s hybrids cars to ‘all electric’ mode when entering low emission zones.

This is a concept bike, intended as a creative and inspiring exercise and to encourage talk about introducing higher speed electric bikes into regulation. The bike comes equipped with a gigantic 2,000Wh battery which the company claims would manage 186 miles on a single charge while using pedal assist.

A model resembling something closer to an electric motorbike was also unveiled, which also claims to have the same range of 186 miles by using a 2,000Wh battery,

Triumph displays images of its new electric motorcycle prototype

Engineers from Coventry have been involved in the two-year project to create a prototype electric motorbike for Triumph.

Triumph Motorcycles has unveiled images showing what its first electric motorcycle is likely to look like. The motorcycle manufacturer, based in Hinckley, have developed this prototype to begin their journey into the electrified future. Triumph has been a part of the Project TE-1 initiative, working with Williams Advanced Engineering, which is the technology and battery division of the Williams Formula One racing team.

The statistics predicted by Triumph would outperform any electric motorbike on the market, for example the electric motor, developed by Integral Powertrain and University of Warwick, is said to have a better range than its competitors. The bike will be going through the next stages to potentially see it on our roads.

The funding for this prototype has come from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, as a part of their aim to push for sustainable and ecological transport in our near future.
